Zaire's Franco was larger than life: he invented a rhythm, befriended a president, and saw Zaire through decades of change. Franco invented the rumba odemba, a variation of the Cuban Rumba that was popular in Zaire in the '50s and '60s. Franco was a close friend of President Mbotu's, which allowed him to sing about social issues other artists wouldn't touch.
