King, Puente, Ross Among 2000 Heroes Award Winners

NARAS to honor B.B. King, Tito Puente, Diana Ross and others

The late, great percussionist Tito Puente, bluesman B.B. King, soul diva Diana Ross, producer Phil Ramone, entertainer Bernadette Peters and writer/director Frank Military have been chosen as recipients of this year's Heroes Award.

The award is part of a gala planned by the New York branch of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The organization will host its fifth annual Heroes Award Gala to honor the 2000 recipients. Past Hero Award winners include Chuck D, Salt N Pepa, LL Cool J, Lou Reed, Philip Glass and Mary J. Blige.

The Heroes Award 2000 Gala is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5, at New York City's Hotel Roosevelt. Singer Tony Bennett (who was honored last year) and actor Armand Assante have both been confirmed as awards presenters, and the Gala promises additional celebrity presenters to be announced between now and the gala.
